Yellow Journalism – The Times of India

Posted in ethics, india, media by shaunak on June 13, 2005

Top ‘n’ reasons why The Times of India (ToI) is a tabloid.

What is a tabloid?
In its traditional sense, tabloids tend to emphasise sensational stories and are reportedly prone to create their news if they feel that the subjects cannot, or will not, sue for libel. In this respect, much of the content of the tabloid press could be said to fall into the category of junk food news.

1. Pune Times, which accompanies the ToI, is almost a soft-porn rag. Notice the photographs of scantily clad ladies gratuitously displaying everything.

2. If you read the ToI edits and news pieces, you will come to the conclusion that Sonia Gandhi cannot do anything wrong, that she is godsend, unimpeachable and infallible.

3. If you read the ToI sports page, Sania Mirza is wondergirl.

4. At the same time, Sachin Tendulkar is a has-been artifact of the cricket world.

5. It is alright to publicise your subsidiaries and sister-companies through dubious news reports.

6. News reports tend to be heavily tainted with the opinions of the concerned reporters as opposed to what they should be – news reports.

7. View and counterview make me wonder whether the editor is suffering from multiple personality disorder.

8. The edits are heavily dumbed down and patronising.

9. On a scale of 1 to 10 for acceptability, the RSS and the BJP (note – no VHP or Bajrang Dal – they deserve whatever vitriol is thrown at them) score 2, just above Dawood and the ISI who score 1 and far below the dictatorial leader of Pakistan who gets 9. Pappi-Jhappi news anyone?

10. The edits are plain boring.

11. They actually pay a lot of attention to Laloo Yadav.

12. Their coverage of the Jharkhand fiasco left a lot to be desired.

13. We don’t care who the guest editor is as long as the edits are readable.

14. They pay more attention to American casualties in Iraq than Indian casualties in Jammu Kashmir and the northeast.

15. They have not heard of the demographic invasion which is taking place in the northeast.

16. Their coverage of local politics is ridiculous. It’s something like this. So and so corporator, along with his cabal, is opposed to so and so thing. He belongs to the Kalmadi faction which is opposed to the XYZ faction. when it should read like this So and so corporator is causing this bill to be stalled resulting in this much money wastage. The obvious ramifications are these and the reasons seem to be political.

I’m sounding right wing? Don’t know why. Is it the RSS reference?

And this is exactly what I feel, so I guess I must be right-of-centre.

TOI is really bad. I can’t agree with you more on the soft porn thing, and the advertising ones sister concerns.

I don’t know when this happened. Many years ago TOI was really nice to read. Especially the Sunday Review. Maybe when they stopped the Review and started that crappy “Men & Women” thing or that “society & living”(or something to that effect) thing, it was a sign of things to come.

u kno i got my epiphany on sunday..after reading so many glamorised reports on Advani-speech-Jinnah..i voiced my opinion too..thoroughly influenced by wht strategic reporters with coloured stories and big headlines had made money out of…n i dunno kno how but somehow i also got influenced..till i read a genuine article (which is almost non existent) by Karan Thapar(he belongs to the good ol’ school or Journalism) in HT and finally i cud read news..not sensational but facts..n more importantly i cud think on my own..felt so much more better..but i was ashamed to think tht i had been so naive as to believe in wht i was made to believe…
the wrst part is most ppl dont end up gettin me wake up calls!!

TOI is a part of the bennet coleman group…that has also launched this business division : MediaNet. What medianet allows you (ie any private enterprise) to do is put up an article in it regarding anything ( which for some reason would serve some vested interest of urs)for a price. And they ‘encourage’ their ‘journalists’ to look for news within medianet. It allows you access to their editorial spaces, which in some ways encourage a certain trend, lifestyle or basically promote some prosuct. So tht results in you and me getting to read about launch of certain products in india, certain unidimensional personal opinions etc. as editorials.

I agree with most of the things you say,

TOI is a pro-establishment paper,on the other hand, IE is an Anti Establishment paper.

I suggest you read The Hindu, its relatively unbaised. ;)

The Sports section of the “Samana” can turn out be quite exciting.

I remember an edition some time back that had on its front page a photo of Americans holding candles, covering about half the page. A horrible “two hour power cut” in New York (I think) had TOI put this on our front page! WTF??
